“I wonder if it remembers me.”
The opening scene of the season 5 premiere of Mad Men, in which young men from the ad agency Young & Rubicam drop bags filled with water onto protesters picketing on the street below, was based on an actual event involving Y&R execs in May 1966. In fact, the scene was written almost verbatim from an article in The New York Times on May 28, 1966 [above]. In Mad Men, the wet protesters storm upstairs to the firm to demand who dropped the water bombs, and one says, “And they call us savages.” That line is a quote from protester Vivian Harris, who joined several women in confronting a Y&R secretary on the agency’s sixth-floor offices in 1966.
